SAM500 Statistical Process Controller

Undisplayed GraphicThe SAM 500 (Signature Analysis Module) mounts on a proprietary Backplane. There are 3 different Backplanes available: the BU04 has room for 2 SAM units, the BU07 has room for 3, and the BU11 which can hold 5. It is connected to an RSCB (Remote Signal Conditioning Module) via a multi-pair cable with 25-pin D-shell connectors. Machine controls and operator interface 24V level digital I/O via a 25-pin D-shell connector. The SmartSAM™ version communicates serially with a controlling terminal via a 9-pin male D-shell connector. The SAMview™ version communicates using ARCNET® protocol with a controlling computer via dual BNC connectors. The SAM 500module monitors up to eight strain gauge input channels at sampling intervals determined by a machine-mounted resolver or incremental encoder. It compares the measured values in real time with predetermined limits. If any measured value exceeds a limit the SAM 500sends a command to the machine (Top Stop, Emergency Stop, etc.). Operation of the SAM 500 and observation of process data through the SAM 500 is facilitated through the use of PC-based software such as SAMview™, SPCview™, FeatureView™ and the MPMview software suite.

Specifications:

Communication Section

Serial Channel: 1 RS-232 port.
Baud Rate: 9600 or 19.2 KBaud.
Function: Factory diagnostics or external VT-11 display drive.
Terminals: 3 pins in connector J1 (TXD, RXD, Signal Ground).
Arcnet Channel: 1 Arcnet port (Arcnet version).
Baud Rate: 2.5 MBaud.
Function: Communication with controlling computer.
Cable Impedance: Either 75 ohm or 93 ohm coaxial cable may be used for the network. Network must be terminated at both ends with a resistor that matches the cable impedance.
Terminals: 2 BNC connectors on removable connector block. Both connectors are in parallel. May be used to connect SAM in a bus (daisy chain) network or terminate last SAM in chain.

Digital Input/Output Section

Number of Channels: 4 input and 4 output.
Isolation: Each input and output is optically isolated and floating.
Input Drive: +5 to +28 volt signal applied across input terminals causes input to conduct. Input appears as a 1.6 Kohm resistor (3 mA at 5 volts, 17 mA at 28 volts).
Output Drive: withstand 60 volts when not conducting and will drop to less than 2 volts when conducting up to 100 mA. Output appears as an open collector transistor shunted by a reverse current protection diode.
Terminals: 16 pins in connector J2 (+ and - for each input or output).

Analog Input Section

Number of Channels: 8
Input Signal: ±5 volt differential signal (for full scale output).
Common Mode Voltage: -5 to +5 VDC.
Conversion Factor: 10.0 differential volts at input (5.0 millivolts at RSCB strain gauge input) produces full scale (2047 counts).
Terminals: 17 pins in connector J3 (+ and - for each channel, analog ground).

Resolver Section (Resolver Version)

Excitation: +2 VAC RMS at 2.5 KHz. to resolver R1, R2 connections.
Resolution: 10, 12, 14 or 16 bits (1024, 4096, 16384 or 65536 pulses per revolution) selected by internal jumpers.
Terminals: 7 pins in connector J3 (R1, R2, S1, S2, S3, S4, digital ground).

Encoder Section (Encoder Version)

Resolution: 1 or 2 pulses per A/B quadrature set selected by internal jumpers.
Terminals: 7 pins in connector J3 (±A, ±B, ±Z, digital ground).

Operating Environment

Input Power: 5.0 VDC 2 Amps from BU04, 07 or 11 backplane.
Temperature Range: 0 to 55 C.
Installation: SAM may be plugged into any available slot in backplane. Backplane may be mounted in NEMA 12 or better enclosure.

MODEL AND SUFFIX CODES

Model: SAM (standard), ArcSAM (with Arcnet).
Suffix: -8E for Encoder version. -8R for Resolver version.
